Dear participants of the Radio School,

In the next session, thursday 3rd of April, we’ll be discussing what we’ve been doing for the past month:
the notations
and choirs
in response to workshop #1: “notation for choir: “voicing a communion of sound(NESS)””.
—
There are the notations
and there are the choirs
between them arises a third

it is this third we will be with on Thursday
—
Before the session we invite you to write your thoughts on the third that arose between the notation you were holding in your hands and the choir tha choired the notation into sound.

who is this third?
—>

the notation as some sort of subjective entity – – – and then –
– the choir as some sort of ecology for performing or determing, i guess life as in life(plural)
somehow the potential organisation transgressed the state of convertional systhetic order –
– I guess, into some sort of more organic or mushy hermony – I don’t know – will get back to this…

‘The third’ was the misunderstanding. I first understood the notation ‘wrong’. The interpretation of the notation became a point of view. It had its own mind, and accidently, and then willfully, it took over the choir and the choir took over it. yes, like ‘an organic or mushy hermony’ as you said.
I guess interesting things happen in this in-between space. My tip is to not to take anything too litterally, no rule no task assignment. Even if you are one of the choir members you can do what you want as long as it is in relation to the others.

As soon as I looked at the notation, I also looked at the negative, or namely, the plurality of simultaneous shadows of the notation that wasn’t “visible” / / / the notation’s notation(s):

The notation encouraged a gathering of subjects in a field, or at least a big space. With open arms. Repeating the words “I’m here” and “I’m open”

THIRD became an impulsive displacement which as soon as I pronounced the words “I’m here”: I automatically observed that I wasn’t “here” and then I heard my voice pronouncing “I’m not here”… And so, my act of observing made my words vibrate / collapse / split / multiply / negotiate their meanings

This gave me a jewel-like glittering feeling of DISSOLVEMENT: The COMPARISON (between the different “choices” I could make) or the JEALOUSY (that appeared when the potential “choices” looked at each other, at me) or the NERVOUSNESS (that appeared when I thought I would have to cut out the shadows of these “choices”; make discipline of my indecisiveness) DISSOLVED completely in an embracing choir/swarm which was very pleasant

I stood in fields. With myself, with friends, with family, with people that have passed away, with old love songs, with the wind and with the rain. And my fields were fiction and my fields were real

THIRD allowed me to stand in these fields with the words, with my openness and my hereness (and their shadows) without being able to pronounce their WORDS

When I later recorded the WORDS (from the notation) at home, I performed the notation with my choir/swarm of choices/voices that was both “here” and “not here” simultaneously. Repeating a “song” that was both “open” and “not open” simultaneously. And “almost open” and “almost not here”…and… in a constant plural impulsiveness …

THIRD appeared as an observer of when I really WAS “there” and i heard THIRD’s voices pronouncing my open-, my not-open-, my here-, my not-here-NESS.

THIRD kinda became the being of my quantum choir/swarm …

I confess that my THIRD was “physicality” and  “obsession” in a way that began before I had even received my notation. I had already made a flyer to invite people to this not-yet choir. I had my friend print the flyers. I am not sure if she gave them out or not but it was the act of making this invitation and thinking of them being given to others. I thought about it so much. I received my notation, printed out a few paper copies and carried them in my backpack everywhere for many days. I had these papers scattered around my apartment at some point, always shuffled.
The notation I had received was movement-based and physical. I then made it my intention to not obsess over what the choir was meant to be and just physically feel it out and let it happen with the notation papers spread out around me. My dog decided to join throughout the session and also created a THIRD of “reacting” to what was happening.
The question arose many times regarding WHAT and WHO consists of a choir and WHEN. I thought a lot about time and layering of these movements, and also the recordings themselves as a piece of evidence of the performance occurring and what led up to it.

I feel like maybe the third in my case was a kind of net that was spun/linked/thrown over everything that was voicing at that particular moment in time and location in space. The awareness and intention of the notation (both carried through the notation-giver and the actual notation itself) met with the intention and awareness of some of the choral entities cast a light/net that then included choral entities into the composition that were not aware of the performance or in differing and changing states of awareness. Eventually this connected net warped also the intention-carriers into different states of awareness and ‘choralness’ – the sound of the paper the notation was printed on for example became a choral enitity, some witnesses became conscious, and some original intentions got let go, confused or transformed.

In other words, the conversation between some choral entities and the notation became in a way maybe magnetic to everything else that was voicing, including it in its orbit and changing the center of gravity of the conversation at the same time.
Or maybe also vice versa?

I don’t really know.
